Our history
Nonna Fortunata, ever since it first opened in 1900 at the foot of the Capitoline Hill, quickly became a gathering place not only for neighborhood residents but also for prominent figures in Rome at the time. Penniless artists in search of a warm, hearty meal, intellectuals engaged in lively discussions of politics and literature, and even a few personalities from Rome’s burgeoning silent film scene found refuge among its wooden tables.
When, in 1950, her daughter decided to reopen the restaurant, carrying on the legacy of Nonna Fortunata, Rome was a different city.
